Intern Training
Family Service Agency's intern training program has been successfully operating for over 20 years. We offer clinical trainee and internship positions for graduate and post-graduate M.A. students of counseling, psychology, and social work, and psychology doctoral students at the practicum level of placement. We have a strong commitment to professional training, providing a trainee/intern friendly environment, challenging clients, warm and nurturing peer support, intensive supervision and professional trainings.
Whether you're an inexperienced trainee/intern or have many hours accumulated toward your license, the training program meets your particular needs. You will gain experience working with individuals (children, adolescents and adults), couples, families and groups. Our client population is wide and varied. You can gain experience in sand tray work with children, work with domestic violence perpetrators in a group psychotherapy setting, see families and children who are referred by CPS, learn successful treatment strategies working with couples, and if you speak Spanish you can be part of our popular and busy bilingual program. These are just a few of the many areas of experience that are possible at Family Service Agency.
On average, a trainee/intern receives 3 to 5 hours of supervision a week. Our ongoing clinical issues training program is designed around your needs of direct client contact information. You will receive a foundation in legal/ethical practical considerations that are client/situation based. Skills in the areas currently emphasized by the mental health profession are taught and practiced, along with more traditional counseling theories and methods. In general, most of our clinicians use a psychodynamic approach, and we are usually open to interns/trainees who use different approaches.
The commitment is for 1 year beginning in September. The hourly commitment is for 14 to 22 hours a week, depending on your intern/trainee status. These are not paid positions, except for working in the bilingual program. Contact Joe Petzel, at (707) 545-4551 ex 215 or email at jpetzel@sonic.net, for more information.
